Glassboro, NJ.(USA) – The Philadelphia Fury announced today that the club will take on SD Eibar of La Liga, the top professional league in Spain and arguably the best in the world, at Richard Wackar Stadium on the campus of Rowan University on Sunday, May 22nd 2016, presented by Global Fútbol Partners. Kickoff is scheduled for 5:00pm EDT.

This match is part of the LFP World Challenge, which is now in its third year of hosting international friendly competition for LaLiga clubs. Tickets are scheduled to go on sale this coming Monday May 9th. For further information, please visit www.furyasl.com.

SD Eibar, founded in 1940, will be playing their first friendly match on American soil against the Fury as part of their 2016 USA exhibition tour concluding in Las Vegas with a matchup versus the New York Cosmos(NASL). “We are excited to welcome SD Eibar, one of the great stories in the world of professional sports, to Philadelphia,” said Fury CEO Matt Driver. “From a historical perspective, there is so much in common between Spain’s Basque Country and the city of Philadelphia since they are symbols of freedom and independence for both of our great countries. And the chance for the Fury to represent the ASL in its first matchup against LaLiga is a great honor”

After the culmination of the Spanish Civil War, Deportivo Gallo and Unión Deportiva Eibarresa decided to join forces and compete under the name of Eibar Fútbol Club, whose first president was Juan Artamendi. The name of the team would change multiple times during its formative years before finally settling on Sociedad Deportiva Eibar. In the 1943-44 season, S.D. Eibar wore the famous azulgrana (blue and red) strip for the first time, courtesy of donations from the Gipuzcoan Football Federation. 75 years on, the team still proudly adorns these colors on their home strip.
